Our Clients Invest In Us, So You Better Damn Well Believe We Invest In Them - How We Backup Our Files To Keep Them Safe
This is going to be a bit of a short and sweet post and more than anything a bit of a “nerd out” over some new tech we have added to the Bird and Rose arsenal. When Katie and I started Bird and Rose around seven years go, we made a promise that above all our client’s would be our top priority. We had a realization that our Client’s literal memories were being entrusted to us. By starting the business not only were we embarking on an adventure that would have us meet literally hundreds of people a year but by putting ourselves out there as photographers we were publicly declaring that we do more than just hit a few buttons on a piece of tech. We were admitting that we took on the responsibility of capturing once in a lifetime things and we needed to make sure those moments were never lost from the time the shutter on our cameras went “click” to the time we delivered the edited photos back.
So, how do we do that? Keep files safe? What does that preservation look like? Well, in our most recent case it is a $2,000 purchase of hard drive storage in the form of four, 16 Terabyte Ironwolf Pro hard drives and a Synology 920+ NAS system. What is a NAS system? To put it most simply, it is an array of hard drives that have the ability to back up across each other and if one goes bad we don’t lose any of the files. This is a good thing and is something we can utilize in our workflow to add insurance that your files and memories are safe. We realize when setting up our shoots that you are making an investment. It’s something that we do not take lightly, and we want you to know just as much as you are investment your money and time into us we are doing everything we can to invest back into you with the promise we are doing everything it takes to keep your investment safe.
Okay! Real quick. I wanted to walk you though our redundancies, even outside of the NAS system. From the time we start shooting we have system in place to ensure safety of files. In our camera’s we shoot to two separate memory cards in case one were to go down. Sometimes even before we leave our location we are already backing the memory cards up to another hard drive for safe keeping. When we get home we plug in one of the memory cards and that card is then backed up to two separate drives. One goes to super fast working drive that we can take around with us so if we want to edit in a place like a coffee shop we can, and the other backup goes directly to our NAS. BUT THERE’S MORE. Not only do we back up two those drives we also have an online cloud service that is constantly connected to our network looking into the NAS for updates and when it finds new files it send them up and into the cloud for safe keeping. We do this incase our physical drives were to ever go down, we know we can pull everything back off of the servers and keep going.
So that’s it. That’s the super fast explanation of what we are doing to keep your files safe. There’s even more in there with encryption and other crazy things that we do, but at the surface, we wanted to let you know just how much we are putting in to the preservation of files. Sometimes we are asked what we are doing to keep our files safe, and I hope this provides some answers to that. If you have more questions, please just let us know! We are happy to answer!
